ESPDIC (Esperanto-English Dictionary, 55,117 entires) now searchable

pdenisowski's picture

Greetings all,

In response to numerous requests I've implemented a search function for ESPDIC (Esperanto-English Dictionary). It can be accessed from my main Esperanto page :

http://www.denisowski.org/Esperanto/Esperanto.html

and there is also a "light" (minimal interface) version available here :

http://www.denisowski.org/Esperanto/ESPDIC/query_espdic.php

The search box accepts either accented (ŝanĝi) or unaccented (sxangxi) entries.

I'm planning to implement some additional features over time, so feedback is very welcome.

Amike,
Paul

The Link Barrier

Mike Jones's picture

What I am going to call the "link barrier" is a special case of the "language barrier". It occurs when you simply want to point out to someone from a different language group that you know of something in their language of interest to them. For example, I added a link to my public domain materials website to mathematics lessons in Spanish. However, notice the quandary that that would put you in if Esperanto did not exist. If you post the information in English, you risk that the intended audience will not recognize it, but you (say) do not have sufficient knowledge of Spanish to post the information in Spanish. What you can do, however, is to post the information in Esperanto.

Here is what the entry looks like in my case:

#132. la matematiko en la hispana

This is in the "Recommended Webplaces" section:

Note that overcoming the "link barrier" is related to using Esperanto as a classifier,

Me Talk Pretty One Day

Mike Jones's picture

This is the title of a popular book of essays by Merkan humorist David Sedaris, and the title of one of its essays, in which the author attempts to learn French in Paris. (Apparently it never occurred to him to learn Esperanto and visit the Paris Esperanto club.)

Anyway, this book title, "Me Talk Pretty One Day" frames the issue of the language barrier in the most memorable way that I ever recall seeing. Maybe we could co-opt this title as a retort to opponents in debates about the need for an international auxiliary language.

Here's the link to the Wikipedia article on this book:

Do, kial ne esperantigi ĝin al Merko aŭ Murko? Mi preferas Merko, ĉar ĝia Esperanta prononco plej proksimigas iun manieron, kiel iuj usonanoj prononcas ĝin.

Amike,

Merkano

Esperanto Translation of Dave McNeely's article "Making Laws and Money"

Mike Jones's picture

Je Dua Penso

Fari Leĝojn kaj Gajni Monon
de Dave McNeely
(c) Fort Worth Weekly

Fort Worth Weekly

Mike Jones's picture

Now and then I have had to go to the Social Security office in downtown Fort Worth. After I park my car, I pick up a copy of Fort Worth Weekly from one of the free dispensers along the way as I am walking the last couple blocks, to have something to read while awaiting my turn. This past Tuesday was one such occasion. Fort Worth Weekly always carries an op-ed piece called "On Second Thought", this one being subtitled "Making Laws and Money". It explains the compensation of Texas legislators, something I had a vague idea about, but which this piece made clear to me. So, I thought it might be nice to share it with a wider readership by translating it into Esperanto and posting it to the Esperanto-USA website. So, I did the translation, and asked the author, Dave McNeely, (by email) if he would be agreeable to this idea. The copyright is held by the periodical, but I wanted the author's consent anyway before I would even take the step of asking the publisher's permission.

One beef I have with Chomsky...

Mike Jones's picture

Here's an interesting quote that I just now ran across on the web:

"One beef I have with Chomsky is the way he airily declares out of court any work which is not within his own domain. Working from first principles, he is able to dismiss investigations - such as those of Basil Bernstein - without having taken the trouble to read the papers. To the extent that American linguistics has come under the thrall of Nativism, other ways of working have been marginalised - so that, for example, we hear little of Functionalist Linguistics (or of its French equivalent 'enunciative grammar')."

Or, one might add, of Esperanto.

Anyway, here's the link to the entire quote:
