Oni pentras Obama kun Esperanta broso

limako's picture

Aperas bonan artikolon pri usonaj sintenoj pri Esperanto ĉe Libera Folio verkita de Tonjo Del Barrio. Mi notis dum la pasitaj kelkaj jaroj ke dekstremuloj provas allogi mokon al homoj kiujn ili ne ŝatas (ekz George Soros) per akuzoj pri Esperantismo. Tre pensiga kaj interesa artikolo kiu montras kion usonaj esperantistoj alfrontas kiam ili konfesas sian esperantistecon.

Ju pli da bruo, des pli da ĝuo

What Do You Take From The Article in Libera Folio?

Russ Watkins's picture

I would be most interested to hear what the E-USA membership took from reading the cited article. 1.That this is a time to lay low and not mention Esperantisto? OR 2. That this could be seen as an oppertunity to educate the public about Esperanto by confronting the lies promlagated in these blogs?

My opinion

russ's picture

Life is too short to worry about how deluded hateful extremist conspiracy theorists might react to stuff that's interesting or important to me. I would not hide my interest in Esperanto any more than I'd hide that I'm vegan, or atheist, or have been known to meditate and practice yoga, or that I support equal rights for gay people, or that I believe people should have the right to make their own decisions about their own bodies, or that I'm against torture and imprisoning people for years with no lawyer or trial and starting lie-based wars, to name a few other things which have attracted the outrage and ire of these same people over the years. Indeed, going silent in the face of their angry outrage simply gives them what they want, namely suppression of the thing they are complaining about.

Do feliĉiĝu, samideano. Venos la verda venk'!

My opinion

limako's picture

I think there are a fair number of people who don't like to admit they speak Esperanto because they're afraid of the opprobrium and stigma it may draw. Also, most of us have, at one time or another, met one of the "fervoruloj" -- someone who's constantly trying to evangelize Esperanto and who chases people away as a consequence. What I try to do is to put my Esperanto activity into context and talk about it only when it seems natural to do so. I don't think the current political atmosphere makes much difference one way or another, personally. But I think it does validate the people who are reluctant to talk about their Esperanto activity because people will make fun of them.

I am a total beginner (as you ALL KNOW!), and I already encountered some of these people who immediately think Esperanto is silly and nothing worth taking seriously. This whole mentality surprised me. How ignorant people are when a new idea is presented, and they have opinions that aren't based on any facts at all. Some family members of mine immediately said they "didn't see the point of making up a language." It's so amazing to me that those are absolutely text-book statements!

I'm very proud of being involved with Esperanto, but I'm sure not going to be a fervorulo. I agree with limako that that sort of thing would turn people off big time. I just continue on with my fun blog (offsite) and have added English, so lots of people look at it and see that it's useful and interesting. Also, people can see that it's really working because I have had over 1200 visitors to my blog in a little over a month! So people are either curious or at least like to look at the pretty pictures on my blog. I don't know. But I'm never going to act embarrassed or ashamed because, when I like something or believe in something, I basically don't give a hoot what people think.

One family member who formerly said she was only interested in learning languages "that she could actually speak to someone" (meaning a "national" language) has decided to look into the free Esperanto course given through ELNA (I'm a tutor for that now since it's super basic, and I was given the answer key anyway). This family member apparently saw that my blog was a huge success and how pretty and fun the language seemed, and has realized that maybe it's also a "real" language that is pretty neat after all.
