Esperanto in Gwinnett County / Esperanto en la kantono Gwinnett

When my family first moved to Gwinnett County in suburban Atlanta, GA, in the early 90s, the county was not very diverse. Nearly 100% of the population spoken English as a first (and only) language. Less than 20 years later, the face of the county has changed. Immigration from Latin America, the Caribbean, southeast Asia, the former Yugoslavia, and other countries has brought not only explosive growth to the county, but a fresh set of challenges. The Gwinnett County Public School system reports that it serves students who were born in over 168 different countries. Over a hundred different languages are spoken at home. Regions of the county have become dotted with businesses catering to particular groups ñ in these neighborhoods, it can be difficult to find signs and services in English. What has surprised me (and the county) has been the pace of these changes. Unfortunately, changes at the political level are slow, and the changing demographics are not yet trickling up to the level of county leadership. The county government remains very homogenous and not receptive to the changing linguistic needs of its population. Some services are available in Spanish, and a very limited number of printed materials are available in a selection of other languages. But for many residents of the county, basic life tasks, such as paying bills, receiving emergency aid, or speaking with a teacher about a student's progress, are difficult or impossible. There is also a growing animosity between different cultural groups. Legislation pushed by the county government is clearly biased, if not discriminatory. Posts of Gwinnett-related message boards show increasing levels of misunderstanding and suspicion. There is an increasing feeling of "us vs. them" in Gwinnett. Every cultural group, even the majority group, is beginning to feel itself threatened and alien.	Ekzistas kreskanta malamikeco inter diversaj kulturgrupoj. Could Esperanto be a solution to Gwinnett's problems? In theory, yes. But I don't believe that Esperanto will ever be accepted as a county-wide second language for the county. I don't think that Gwinnett county will ever provide services or support in Esperanto on a large scale. Language problems will continue until national legislation or technology addresses them.	Ĉu Esperanto povus esti solvo al la problemoj de Gwinnett? Teorie, jes. Sed mi opinias, ke Esperanto neniam fariĝos akceptata kiel dua lingvo por la kantono. Mi ne kredas, ke Gwinnett iam en la proksima estonteco provizos servojn aŭ helpon en Esperanto je granda skalo. Lingvaj problemoj restos ĝis naciaj leĝoj aŭ teknologio solvos ilin.
But on a smaller scale, Esperanto is a solution for better understanding. In a local group, Gwinnett residents from diverse backgrounds could build friendships and understanding. With 168 languages in the county, Gwinnett could almost play host to its own "World Congress of Esperanto." Participants in such a group would reap great personal benefits. The progress of local groups in Gwinnett has been painfully slow, but the changing population and needs of the county will make its citizens more aware of language problems in general, and the benfits of Esperanto. If a strong local group of Esperantists formed in Gwinnet, it would serve as a prime example of the bridge-crossing capabilities of the International Language Esperanto ñ not just internationally, but in one's own backyard.
