"Digital" = "cifereca"?

Philip David Morgan's picture

I guess you know you are still very much a "komencanto" when you make naive assumptions about words in Esperanto.

Especially when you decide to use Esperanto in a hobby like digital movie making, as I am doing.

When I began to teach myself how to use Apple's iMovie (with which my first video was made), I did a short (18 second) simple opening logo reel using my Konstelacio "K" insignia.

I'm now grateful I didn't use this logo reel.

My mistake was to fade in the words "Konstelacio DV." Yes, I didn't use the final "D" in "DVD" (Digital Versatile Disc). I had meant to use "DV" as in "digital video," because I wasn't planning then (or now) to release my work as DVDs. (Konstelacio's future is in file formats such as Xvid, MP4, Ogg Theora, and Matroska.)

I have since learned that the word for "digital" in Esperanto is, in fact, either "cifereca" (as per Sergio Pokrovskij's Komputada Lekisikono and the OpenOffice.org people) or "cifera" (S–ro Pokrovskij again).

The recently–published Komputeko (E@I / Espero, 2008) doesn't stop there:

DVD (any DVD) = DVD or lumdiskego
DVD video = vidodisko

Sigh... so now I am trying to come up with a new logo reel from scratch, while I prepare for my next short. This time I'll probably just have "Konstelacio" and the "K" emblem and not bother with the rest. Just call me not so much sadder but wiser for the little lesson: Just because a word like "digital" is supposedly everywhere doesn't mean every language accepts it.

But then, I should have learned that from the French, where the phrase "digital recording" becomes "enregistrement numérique."

"cifereca" is correct, although I would've guessed "digita" :)

However, "digita" means "dammed up" like what a beaver does, because "digi" means to "dam up" :)

Jes, mi pensas ke "cifereca" estas la ĝusta vorto.

Ekzemplo: "Cifereca fotilo" http://eo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cifereca_fotilo

ReVo ne havas aliajn oftajn komencantajn provojn kiel "digita", "diĝitala", "digitala", sed ekzistas tute alia zamenhofa vorto "digitalo" kun tute alia signifo: digitalo estas ia herbo, angle "foxglove".

Amuze ja ke "digita" estas dig-ita de la verbo "digi". :)
