NASK!
The North American Summer Esperanto Course (NASK) is June 29th to July 17th, 2009, in sunny San Diego, CA!
There's a beautiful, informative new website available with tons of great information about the program:
I hope you'll seriously consider making the trip to California for NASK. It's a considerable investment - in time, money, energy - but the rewards are even greater.
I'm a six-time participant in NASK, going from a nervous beginner who hadn't even opened Gerda Malaperis yet in 2000, to an assistant instructor in 2005 and 2007. That's the magic of a program like NASK!

NASK: Costs and Benefits
There's no doubt that NASK is expensive and requires a substantial commitment of time. It's simply one of the options available to people who are interested in learning and using Esperanto.
That said, the NASK experience is quite remarkable for most participants. Remember that the cost includes (in the current location) three full weeks in sunny San Diego/La Jolla, three meals a day of excellent food, many opportunities to meet and socialize with friends old and new, AND academic credit from a highly respected university.
There are many participants who come to NASK year after year . . . people obviously find it well worth the investment of money and time.
However, if someone doesn't want to, or isn't able to afford NASK, there are certainly other ways to learn and use the language.
The new NASK website includes comments from previous students. This isn't artificial propaganda--these are the genuine reactions of people who have studied at NASK.
I've also got to say that, as is true with any academic course, you do get from it what you put into it. Learning any language requires work, and active engagement with other speakers. We've had students who haven't quite thought through the "work" aspect of it, and have seen them not be as successful or satisfied as others. Those individuals are definitely a small minority, however.
