Komputilaj voluntuloj bezonataj (Computer volunteers needed) por Projekto Gutenberg

Volunteers needed for formatting for Project Gutenberg

With the recent gift by Donald Broadribb of his translations of the OZ books to the public domain, we now have a pressing need for volunteers who have enough computer skills to format the texts according to the demands of Project Gutenberg. Each time someone does this, we make Esperanto literature more easily available for download and reprinting. Furthermore, we raise the visibility of Esperanto to English-speakers, in a widely-known, highly respected, and long-lived repository.

Andrew Sly, who is busily formatting the gift by Odd Tangerud comprising his translations of Henrik Ibsen's plays, described the process this way:

  1. Download file from Norwegian website
  2. Run through automatic transform which changes the non-standard encoding used for accented characters into x-metodo, and removes a lot of extra mark-up junk.
  3. Manually do some more reformatting, spacing, look for a few common errors, etc.
  4. Do a read-through of the whole text, using an English translation for reference. Send questions to more experienced e-isto that I am unsure of.
  5. Run a spell-check on the whole text
  6. Create two utf-8 and ascii text files (I've been working with just the html up to this point.)
  7. Run final automated checks (becauses the darndest things seem to creep in at the last minute.) Zip files and upload to PG, fill out title/author info etc.

Now, I haven't timed it, but I'm guessing that I could spend from 10 to 14 hours altogther in processing one of these.

We really need someone else, preferably someone computer-skilled, to learn how to perform these steps and become familiar with the Project Gutenberg format. We have at least 20 literary treasures now that we can publicize to the whole world, at the considerable but worthy cost of 10-15 hours for each book. Andrew Sly will have a hard time doing these all by hisself. The continuing efforts of promoting this project, and its success so far, suggest that we may soon get another 20.

Pro la lasta donaco de Donald BROADRIBB de liaj elangliĝoj de la "OZ" libroj al la publika regno, ni nun necesegas voluntulojn, kiuj havas sufiĉan sperton pri komputiloj por formati teskstojn laŭ la postulojn de Projekto Gutenberg. Ĉiam iun farus ĉi tion, ni havebligi Esperantan literaturon per elŝutado kaj represo. Plue, ni propagandas Esperanton al angla-parolantoj, en vaste konata, tre respektata, kaj longdaŭra literaturaro.

Andrew SLY, kiu nun laboregas formati la donacon de Odd TANGERUD, kiu inkluzivas liajn tradukojn de la teatraĵoj de Henrik IBSEN, priskribas la taksoj tiel:

  1. Elŝuti la dosieron el la norvegan retpaĝaron
  2. Uzu aŭtomatan ŝanĝilon kiu ŝanĝas la malkutiman encifran metodon por la ĉapelitaj literoj al x-metodo, kaj forviŝi la cetera ne-bezonata formataĵon.
  3. Per-mane, faru iom de reformato, respacado, kaj serĉi kutimajn errarojn, ktp.
  4. Tralegu la tutan tekston, uzante nacian lingvon tekston kiel helpilo. Sendu demandojn al pli sperta e-isto.
  5. Uzu literum-kontrolantan sofvaron sur la tuta teksto.
  6. Kreu du dosierojn de tekstoj, en la "ascii" kaj "utf-8" formatojn, aldonita al la HMTL uzita ĝis ĉi tiam,
  7. Plenumi fina aŭtomatajn kontrolojn (ĉar la plej diablaj aĵoj
    enrapmis en la lasta minuto.) "Zip" dosierojn kaj alŝuti al PG,
    enskribi titolo, aŭtoro, ktp.

Probable oni elspezos 10 ĝis 15 horojn en sumo por ĉio libro.

Ni bezonas iun aliajn, prefere iun kun komputila lerteco, por lerni kiel plenumi ĉi tiojn paŝojn kaj ekkompreni la Project Gutenberg-an formaton. Ni havas pli ol 20 literaturajn trezorojn nun kiujn ni povas pulikigi al la mondo, per la malbagatela sed inda kosto de 10-15 horoj por ĉiu libro. Andrew SLY ne facile povas fari ĉion meme. La daŭrantaj penoj propagandi la projekto, kaj ĝi sukceso ĝis nun (hodiaŭ, estas 19 libroj en la e-a aro), sugestas ke ni baldaŭ havas aliajn 20.
