Unesko al ILEI: Adiaŭ

I don't normally blog on the E-USA site during the day, but I just read on Libera Folio that UNESCO is officially dropping the Internacia Ligo de Esperantistaj Instruistoj (ILEI) from their roster of non–govermental organizations, or NGOs.

At the heart of this matter is a questionnaire that ILEI didn't complete and return to UNESCO, as is required every six years. Whether ILEI was unable — or unwilling — is something I don't know at this time.

But I would think that an organization of Esperanto teachers, hopefully interested in passing Zamenhof's legacy to the ones to come after them, would take the time to keep their membership in a world body in good standing. If the UEA can do it, then (pardon the bluntness) what is ILEI's problem?

For those needing a confirmation, have a look at the appendix to UNESCO's sexennial report in its March 9th draft form. UEA is among the listed NGOs whose membership in UNESCO is in good standing (Annex II).

ILEI is listed in the list of NGOs to be deep–sixed (Annex III) as "Ligue internationale des enseignants esperantophones."

Not the best of breakfast time news. And not a good way for any NGO to end their year.
