So what did you do to celebrate Esperanto-Day? Did you get together with your local club to share dinner, sing, or recite poetry? Or maybe just to get sloshed and dance on the tables? More importantly — did you get pictures? :-) Due to a more regular publishing schedule, the deadline for the next issue of Esperanto USA is coming up soon: the 10th of January! So hurry up and send us your reports about E-Day (even short ones), photos, etc. As always, we welcome contributions on other topics, too! |

Pictures! -- Strategic Value for Esperanto
I have been watching, with great interest, the photos that appear on the e-usa website.
You have an excellent idea to feature different photos at different times. Bravo.
Now a good question is: how can that attractive feature be yet improved?
Here are four possible ideas that might help:
First, add a caption. Explain briefly and attractively how that picture relates to Esperanto. Such an explanation will increase the effectiveness on the ne-espa publiko.
Second, seek photos that exemplify international communication. No better way to do this than have the Chinese, the Africans, the Europeans, etc etc, doing some activity in the same photo.
Third, perhaps tweak the design of the very good e-usa website. My personal perception is that the outline map of North and South America pulls the eyes too heavily to the right. What do the graphic designers think?
Fourth, raise the quest for the good and great photos to the strategic level. The public visitor to your website may very well stay or click to a different site based on a split-second reaction to that key photo.
This last point raises the relevant question of how to raise the priority for great Esperanto photos on a worldwide scale.
Whoever can build a website that succeeds in getting Esperanto shutterbugs, amateurs and even professionals to contribute non-royalty, quality photos that can then be used worldwide to promote the Esperanto Movement might be, in my opinion, a candidate for Esperantist of the Year (sometimes a small, good, focused idea can have a great effect).
Marketing and advertising have shown through the years that one GREAT photo (as opposed to 1000 GOOD photos), can increase the readership of the following material (in an ad, on a magazine cover, on a book, etc) many times over -- this factor can easily go to 10 or above.
