Recommendations for post-beginners

After you've worked your way through your first Esperanto textbook, readers, or online courses, you'll be ready for some more advanced reading material. We've selected the books below with you in mind. All items are available in our online bookstore (Retbutiko), along with thousands of other books, CDs, pins, postcards, and more.

Jordan, David. Being Colloquial in Esperanto 1999. 235p. 215x140. Bound. USA. ISBN 0939785048. $15.00

Considered an immediate classic for its depth, breadth and level of humor. This book is in English and addresses many common questions and problems that English-speakers students of Esperanto will encounter, such as "false friends" (never say "adulto" when you mean "adult!"), trickier points of Esperanto grammar, and ways to make your writing and speaking more fluid and natural.

Boulton, Majorie. FAKTOJ KAJ FANTAZIOJ. 1984. 430p. 210x150. Paper. Netherlands. ISBN 92 9017 028 X. $23.00.

A full-fledged reader for students who have advanced beyong the beginning stages of the language. Includes many short stories, proverbs, puzzles, some verse (much of it describing points of grammar), and a ten-page vocabulary of new or unusual words used in the text.

Privat, Edmond. KARLO. 1968. 47p. 150x115. Paper. Netherlands. $2.90.

This is an older, sentimental book, written by one of Esperanto's early pioneers. It's aimed at novice readers. The story is well-known and loved among Esperantists.

Privat, Edmond. VIVO DE ZAMENHOF. 2007. 176p. 175x125. Paper. The Netherlands. ISBN 978-929017097-6. $15.70.

A short, sentimental biography of L. L. Zamenhof, author of Esperanto. A relatively easy read. There are more modern (and accurate) biographies available, but "Vivo de Zamenhof" is still an important part of Esperanto culture.

Auld, William. TRADUKU!. 2004 (2nd ed.). 116 p. 210x145. Paper. Great Britain. ISBN 0-902756-23-0. $18.50.

A collection of 56 difficult, because colloquial, paragraphs in English, followed by their translations into Esperanto and discussions of difficult points. Includes an index of English terms discussed and of Esperanto words used to resolve these points. These exercises originally appeared in La Brita Esperantisto 1991-1999. A must-have for the individual who wants to get a full command of colloquial Esperanto.
