Strategy for a New Year / Strategio por Nova Jaro
| For the New Year, I'm planning to adopt a new strategy for my Esperanto activity. | It's a saying in English that you should 'pick your battles'. The implication is that you should only fight on ground where you can win. In the Esperanto movement, this results in near paralysis. Since there are relatively few battles that we can win outright, the result is that too many people do nothing. But there's another way to pick battles. | Estas diraĵo en la angla ke oni 'elektu la batalojn'. La sekvo estas ke oni nur luktu sur tereno kiun oni povas gajni. En la Esperanto-movado, tiu produktas paralizado. Pro tio ke estas malmultaj bataloj kiujn ni povas rekte gajni, la rezulto estas ke multaj homoj faras nenion. Sed eblas elekti batalojn aliiel. |
| As an aside, some people might find the language of "battles" to be too militaristic. Please don't get caught up in that -- I'm using it purely as a convenient frame. We're really not talking about battles here. I'm really talking about finding the points of disagreement. You think Esperanto is worth learning and not everyone agrees, right? Let's explore that a little farther. | Flanke, kelkaj homoj plendos ke la esprimo pri "bataloj" estas tro militema. Bonvole ne kaptiĝu en tio -- mi uzas ĝin nur kiel konvena kadro. Ni ne vere parolas pri bataloj ĉi tie. Mi vere temas la trovadon de punktoj de nekonsento. Vi kredas ke Esperanto meritas lernadon kaj ne ĉiuj konsentas, ĉu? Ni esploru tion plu. |
| What do you think Esperanto is good for? Pick something. Why isn't Esperanto being used for that? Who is the person who could make that happen or make that decision? Have you asked them? Why not? Usually the answer is "because they would never agree" -- its not a battle you could win. That's not the end of the world. | Por kio valoras Esperanto? Elektu ion. Kial oni ne uzas Esperanton por tio? Kiu estas la homo kiu povis fari tion aŭ decidi pri tio? Ĉu vi demandis al tiu? Kial ne? | These points of disagreement represent controversy that can easily generate press. If you petition a decision-maker to adopt Esperanto for some reasonable purposes and they reject it -- especially if they do so out of hand and without consideration -- you can write press-releases and letters to the editor and make the case publicly. The media loves controversy and they're constantly struggling to find newsworthy items. Your action just has to bring out this controversy to generate news. | Tiuj punktoj de ne konsento estas alloga polemiko por la gazetaro. Se vi petas decidofaranto ke tiu adopti Esperanto por iu komprenebla kialo kaj ili neias tion -- speciale se ili faras tion sen konsidero -- vi povas skribi gazetanoncoj kaj leteroj al redaktoro kaj publikigi la meritojn de via propono. La gazetaro amas polemikon kaj ĉiam klopodas trovi eldonindaj artikolojn. Via ago nur devas montri ion disputindan por produktu novaĵon. |
| The news coverage won't necessarily change the outcome. It will get the issue out in front of people and it may encourage some readers to want to find out more... Maybe even join you on your next action... Maybe even learn Esperanto themselves. And that's the battle we really want to win, isn't it? | La gazeta atento ne necese ŝanĝos la rezultojn. Ĝi metos la aferon antaŭ homoj, tamen, kaj eble kuraĝigos kelkajn lerni pli... Eble ili eĉ partoprenos je via sekvonta agado... Eble ili eĉ lernos Esperanton mem.
