Land of Freedom

"Land of freedom, land of the future, I salute you!" With these words, the creator of Esperanto L.L. Zamenhof began his speech at the 6th World Congress of Esperanto, held in Washington in 1910. This year we invite you to celebrate the 100th anniversary of that event with us, again in Washington, for the 58th National Conference of Esperanto USA. We will enjoy the Memorial Day festivities of the capital, and the Esperanto atmosphere of the conference.

We sincerely hope that you will consider contributing something to the program. Whether a lecture, instruction of a game or a hobby, or a guided excursion, anything is welcome. According to the chosen theme "Land of freedom," we suggest content related to the 100 year heritage of Esperanto in the USA, and of course its future. We intend to explore this theme from the viewpoints of both historic facts and ideals. It is clear from the speech of Zamenhof (available here) that he came to the US full of optimism. He viewed the US as a model of his vision for all of humanity, people of diverse races and cultures united by a common language. We will consider the aptness of that parallelism in 1910 and today.

To propose a program activity, please contact the local committee at

The exact program will take shape from the proposals that we receive, but here is a rough schedule:

If you are planning on coming on the excursion to the capitol on Friday, please meet at the Hyatt hotel lobby at 10:30 am. We'll set out at 11 so don't be late!
Also, please buy your metro fare cards for all excursions ahead of time, so we don't have to wait around for everyone to buy it.

More program details

The conference program is taking shape, and we are pleased to announce many exciting activities! It's not too late to register, so sign up and plan your travel to Washington today!

We will be featuring:

Arika Okrent - "Esperanto's place in invented languages."
Humphrey Tonkin - "Esperanto in today's world."
Skype link with the Russian Esperanto conference
Zamenhof's visit to Washington
Esperanto in Africa
The travel situation regarding the World Esperanto Congress in Cuba
A special screening of the award-winning short film, "Conlang," a new comedy about invented languages.

But it's not all just about the movement. We also have some wonderful programs that are just in Esperanto, not about it.

Our solar orbit.
Are we what we eat?
Poetry roundtable
Yoga for beginners.

And some exciting excursions on the menu:
Friday (before the conference): Capitol, White House (tentative)
Saturday: Library of Congress, including a special look at the Esperanto collection.
Smithsonian Institute
Monday: Holocaust Museum (tentative)

And much much more! We're not listing everything here, but other activities include
the banquet, the auction, a one-man play, a full slate of musical entertainment Sunday night, games, lessons for beginners, and as always, lots of chances to meet interesting people and practice your Esperanto. I usually dream in Esperanto by the second night of a conference. Don't miss this historic event! I promise it will be worth the trip to Washington, just for the "mystery guest" at the Sunday night entertainment program!

LK 2010 Esperanto book exchange / Interŝanĝo de esperantaj libro

erinja's picture

[en Esperanto sube]

I'm a member of the local committee for the upcoming Landa Kongreso in DC. I'm writing to let you know about an Esperanto book exchange we'll be running at the conference. Esperanto books are expensive and can be hard to find; it can be difficult for students, the unemployed, and people who generally don't have a lot of money, to get books in Esperanto. At the same time, many of us who have been involved in Esperanto for a while have spare reading material lying around. Therefore, we are encouraging convention participants to bring their unwanted Esperanto materials with them to the Landa Kongreso. Books? Magazines? A CD that a foreign samideano gave you, that you never liked anyway? Bring it! We're not looking to put the book service out of business, we're looking to recirculate some unused materials. Anything of a potentially significant value will likely go in as an auction item, though I find it hard to imagine that anyone would bring something especially valuable. Books of nominal value (most of the ones that come in, I expect) will be sold at a used books table, at a nominal cost, with proceeds going to an as-yet-to-be-determined good cause - perhaps to a student Esperanto group. Or if anyone has an idea for a good cause, let me know! We'll announce that information on-site. Any magazines that anyone wants to bring will be given away for free. I know that I don't have much interest in reading my copies of "Esperanto" and "Kontakto" more than once, so they sit on my shelf, but I really appreciated stuff like that as a beginner. I encourage everyone to use this as an opportunity to pass along materials that aren't getting any use, and to refresh your own collection. Please feel free to contact me if you have any comments or ideas on how to do this better!

Esperanta versio:

Esperanto Widows!

jedmeltzer's picture

Do you want to bring your family to Washington with you, but they're not interested in Esperanto and fear being bored? Never fear! We are pleased to announce a new program: "Esperanto Widows." (Note the Esperanto name is gender neutral - gevidvoj).
It will be an organized group for people who want to see the sights in DC and complain together about their family members' obsessions with Esperanto.
So don't hesitate to bring the fam!

poetry reading - contribute a poem!

jedmeltzer's picture

Dear Samideanoj,
I invite you to participate in a poetry deklamado to take place during the LK in Washington. Please send me
by email either a) a favorite Esperanto poem (ie, composed in Esperanto) or b) a translation of American poetry into Esperanto. I will compile
an anthology and participants will take turns reading poems aloud. If you would simply like to be a reader, please contact me as well.
I welcome your participation!
