CEED corrections

Are there any plans afoot for revising the dictionary of Peter Benson? We’re talking about the “Comprehensive English-Esperanto Dictionary” (CEED). If a second edition would be out of the question in the near future, how about issuing a supplement, as was done for PIV long before NPIV came out?

Below are some corrections that need to be made, which I have also uploaded as a document to my ipernity account. (The issue of additions that need to be made is much more complex, and is not addressed here.)

Corrections for CEED (Comprehensive English-Esperanto Dictionary, by Peter Benson, 1995), suggested by Mike Jones

Under “feed” is the typo “feedss”.

Under “speleology”, there is a space inside of the intended “spelunker”: “spe lunker”.

Under “impress”, there is a typo consisting of a space in the intended “feeling”: “feel ing”.

Under “tight” there is the typo, or outright mistake, of “taught” in the place of “taut”.

Under “supermarket” there is the typo consisting of a space in the intended “permerkato”: “permerka to”.

Under “opportune”, “opportunity” is given as la noun form, but “opportunity” is not the noun form of “opportune”. “opportune” is a synonym for “convenient”, and its noun form, if we want to insist that it have one, would be “convenience”. The correct translation of “opportunity” is “okazo” (not “oportuno”), as in “I did not have the opportunity to meet him.” [“Mi ne havis la okazon renkonti lin.”]

The translation for “suede” begins with an initial upper-case letter. But in the dictionary of J.C. Wells, the entry for “suede” is completely lower-case, and I agree with Wells on this point.

Under “down” there is the typo of “sob” for “sub”.

Under “try”, there is the typo of “endeaver” for “endeavor”.

I would prefer to translate “popcorn” as “krevmaizo” (rather than as “krakmaizo”).

Under “cub”, the text “leonino kun ŝiaj idoj” should perhaps be better as “leonino kun siaj idoj”.

Under “implicate”, “(thing implied)” should be changed to “(logical sense)”.

Under “review”, “revue” is given as the translation of “magazine”. This is of course a typo for “revuo”.
