Recommended translations into Esperanto

Esperanto, in addition to its own body of original literature, hosts a great variety of world literature in translation. It can be a great learning exercise to read a book you're already familiar with in a new language. Or, you can explore the literature and culture of another part of the world! All items are available in our online bookstore (Retbutiko), along with thousands of other books, CDs, pins, postcards, and more.

Especially recommended is UEA's Oriento-Okcidento series, which includes several dozen outstanding works and translations from around the world, including Gunter Grass's The Tin Drum, Marco Polo's Book of Wonders, Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls, Rabindranath Tagore Hungry Stone, and much more.

Tolkien, J.R.R. La Hobito (The Hobbit).2005. 224p. 200x250. Paper. Russia. $17.10.

Trans. Christopher GLEDHILL, poetry trans. William AULD. The Hobbit is the novel that introduces Middle Earth, Tolkien's fantasy land of hobbits, elves, wizards and many other wondrous creatures. It sets the stage for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, one of the most-loved fantasy adventures of the 20th century.

Tolkien, J.R.R. LA MASTRO DE L' RINGOJ (The Lord of the Rings).2007. 464+368+328p. 200x140. Paper. Russia. $102.40.

Trans. by William Auld. 2nd edition. The English fantasy trilogy that triggered the current global enthusiasm for fantasy. In three volumes (La kunularo de l' ringo, La du turegoj and La reveno de la reĝo) the story recounts the adventure of two young hobbits setting out to destroy a ring of power which will, if allowed to fall into the wrong hands (and all hands are wrong hands, as the story shows), lead to the enslavement of Middle Earth.

LA BIBLIO (The Bible). 2006. 1375 p. 210x130. Bound. Czech Republic. ISBN 8085853906. $31.30.

A totally new edition of this staple of Esperanto (and world) literature. Includes the Old Testament in Zamenhof's masterful translation, the New Testament, and the "Deuterocanonical Books", translated from Greek by Gerrit Berveling.

Shakespeare, William. REĜO LEAR (King Lear). 156p. 200x145. Paper. Netherlands. $11.30.

King Lear in Kálmán KALOCSAY's translation. Series "Oriento-Okcidento" #6. Many of Shakespeare's plays have been translated into Esperanto, including Hamlet, Twelfth Night, Richard the Third, A Midsummer's Night's Dream, and Henry the Fifth. See more Shakespeare translations.

SILVERSTEIN, Shel. LA BONA ARBO (The Giving Tree). 1999. 60p. 215x165. Bound. Croatia. ISBN 9536157993 $15.50.

Trans. Victor SADLER. A simple tale for children of all ages who need to be reminded that giving is better than receiving; that trees can feel and express love; and that happiness is truly attainable. Cute illustrations well reflect the tone of the story.
