Resolutions of the Board 2005

Propono 2005-1, eposxte.

Dear ELNA member,

From time to time people (both inside and outside the
organization) ask why we are called the Esperanto
League for N o r t h A m e r i c a when we really
are the organization for the United States. While
there are historical reasons for this name, we have
long believed that it was our only choice since
changing it legally, we believed, would be too
difficult. The Estraro, in consultation with certain
members, has investigated and found this not to be the
case. Legally, it is fairly simple to change our name.
We could use both names for a transition period and
eventually switch completely to a new name which more
accurately describes who we are.

The name "Esperanto League for North America" is part
of our bylaws, so any new name must be approved by a
two-thirds majority vote by the members. Since names
are often very personal and elicit strong feelings, as
they have with the estraro; we have decided to call
for a more general discussion by the whole membership
before and during our convention this year.
Afterwards, the Estraro will select one candidate name
based on the preferences expressed in this discussion
and ask the members to approve or reject this new name
during the Landa Kongreso 2006.

As a first step, the Estraro would like to ask you
to fill out this ballot of preferences. It is not
an official vote, but is intended as a survey to begin
a formal discussion of this question. The results
of this survey will be discussed with the members
in a round table discussion at the Landa Kongreso
in Austin this year.

Note that the alternatives could go on forever -
whether we should keep the name "league/ligo" (US
Esperanto League?) or call ourselves an "association/
asocio" or a "society/societo." We are primarily
interested in your preferences for the names already
listed since they seem to have the greatest support
at this time, but a space has been provided on the
survey for additional suggestions. If you have a
suggestion which you feel is a better choice than the
ones already listed, please write it in this space.
These too will be discussed in Austin.

Additional information:
various pros and cons of the names which have been
suggested so far.

ELNA - Esperanto League for North America
- Esperanto-Ligo por Norda Ameriko

Pro: Well known among Esperanto speakers.
Works well in both English and Esperanto.
Con: We're not the association for all of
North America.

ELU - Esperanto League of the USA
- Esperanto-Ligo de Usono.

Pro: Keeps connection with old name by changing
"North America" to "USA/Usono." Name is a
reminder that we need to "go out" to use and
promote the language.
Con: "Elu" means "she" in Ido, which may be a
concern to at least a few of our members.
Some people consider the word "League/Ligo"
somewhat outdated.

EUSA - Esperanto-USA / Esperanto USA

Pro: It is short, clear, and to the point, which
could be useful in communicating what we are
about to people unfamiliar with Esperanto or
our organization. Even though "USA" is not
an Esperanto word, it is well known and
understood everywhere. (See USA-Esperanto
Con: Some members feel it sounds trendy and could
become dated. The abbreviation does not have
an obvious pronunciation, so perhaps it would
be better not to abbreviate it. "USA", while
clear, is not normally used within the
Esperanto community.

USEA - U.S. Esperanto Association
(or United States Esperanto Association).
- Usona Esperanto-Asocio. (kp. USEJ)

Pro: Works in both English and Esperanto, and uses
the more common word "asocio" without being
confused with UEA.
Con: In English, it's not a pronounceable word
like "ELNA" is.

USAE - U.S. Association for Esperanto
- Usona Asocio por Esperanto

Pro: Can be abbreviated USA-Esperanto in
public relation contexts and for purposes
of fundraising as symbolically representing
the scope and goal of the organization. (See
also Esperanto-USA above.)
Con: Harder to pronounce.
