How to Contribute Content

In addition to being a simple website, this is also a user community. We need you to add content. We need to know how you think we can promote Esperanto; what you need to learn and promote Esperanto better; what you think would be fun and exciting.

Here is a very brief guide to adding content:

Look at the right-hand side of your screen, under your username. (You will likely have to scroll down to see it.) If you see "create content" as a link, then you are empowered to add to this website. (If you don't see the link and you think you ought to have it, contact retpagxestroj at esperanto-usa dot o rg).

If you see the link, click on it. This will disclose other links and offer you some choices depending on your privileges. The two most useful kinds of content for members to contribute are Stories and Blog Entries.

A Story is a news item that you think would be of interest to the Esperanto-USA community written from a general or neutral point of view. For example, if there was an article in your local paper about Esperanto, you might want to post a story about it.

A Blog entry is like a Story, but it's from the point of view of the individual author. If you were interviewed by a local paper about Esperanto, you might be interested in telling us about it by writing a blog entry.

On the page that appears, enter a title for your content item in the Title field and then the "meat" of your content in the Body field. Don't worry about formatting; just type stuff, and break paragraphs with a blank line. Then click one of the buttons labelled "preview" or "submit". You'll probably have to scroll down a little to find these buttons because they're at the bottom of the page. "Preview" will let you see what the page will look like before it's actually "published," and is usually a good idea. Go ahead and "submit" the page if you're feeling confident. You can always edit it later.

You will have just created a "node" of some kind. Depending on your privilege level, you may have to wait for an administrator to approve it before it becomes fully available on the website.

That is all you need to know to usefully create content on this site.

The software that runs this site is called "Drupal". You may wish to read some Drupal documentation. It is important to realize that you can't make any bad mistakes in creating a page. Do not be afraid. Anything you can create, you will be able to edit or remove. If you get confused and can't change it, one of the administrators will help you. There is no reason to hesitate: test things out. Create content that says "This is some test content." Or "Cxi tiu estas acxa prova verkajxo".

Drupal uses Unicode (UTF-8 encoding). To use Esperanto characters in the content that you add, you should have some method to type them in as Unicode, e.g. using the US Extended Keyboard Layout on a Macintosh or the free keyboard driver EK for Windows. You can also enter x-codes and select the "x-method" input format when editing our pages. In a pinch, you can use html entities like ŭ. We have a page how to enter Esperanto text with more detailed instructions if you need help.
